Pride Month may be over for another year, but our LGBTQ+ Society is still going strong, offering support and friendship to UOS students.
This year has been so productive and fulfilling for the LGBTQ+ Society. Looking back on our highlights of the year has been fun and filled us with hope for the next one! We couldn’t have done as much as we did without our fantastic LGBTQ+ Officer Lauren, who has supported us and the students with perseverance and enthusiasm, or everyone at the SU supporting us and the LGBTQ+ community.
Our top 5 highlights from the year are as follows:
Pizza and Games Night
We had an amazing time collaborating with the D&D society to hold a games night at Langden games. We were able to see a whole range of students socialising and having fun.
Quiz and Dinner for HAFH
Our largest event of the year brought loads of students to compete in our quiz at Mix to wrap up LGBTQ+ history month. It was a major success and will definitely return to connect students and test their knowledge!
Reclaim the Night 2025
We participated in the Reclaim the Night march as the LGBTQ+ Society, and as students who strive for the safety of women and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Reviving the society
Born out of an impromptu conversation, we have worked hard to revive the society and create a space for LGBTQ+ students to socialise and feel secure. We’re so proud of how far we’ve come and are looking forward to an even more successful society next year.
Improving the presence of LGBTQ+ students
Going to university is already nerve-wracking, even more so when you hold an identity that isn’t always accepted. Being able to show new and current students that queer students at the University of Suffolk are welcome and allowed to take up space was and continues to be rewarding.
This Pride Month has reminded us that the progress for LGBTQ+ rights has only come this far because of the sacrifices made by the transgender people and people of colour in our community. Without them, there would be no us. As the current climate may try and hide us away, we will work harder than ever to make LGBTQ+ spaces larger and more inclusive for the backbones of our community.
We’re so excited to enter the next year and see what it brings us, and our new committee members are raring to go! We will continue making space for LGBTQ+ students and providing support in every way we can.
