📋 Before you book

By joining the scheme, you agree to:

  • Pay a £50 refundable deposit plus loan fee
  • Take care of the bike and return it on time
  • Cover late fees (£5 per day) or damage/loss (up to £100)
  • Use the bike safely and report any issues

About the Scheme

What is the Borrow-a-Bike scheme?

A low-cost bike loan scheme run by the University of Suffolk Students’ Union to help students get around Ipswich sustainably and affordably.

Who can use the scheme?

All UOS Students’ Union registered, Ipswich based students with a valid ID.

Booking & Collection

How do I book a bike?

Book online using the Microsoft Form on the SU website.

Where do I collect and return the bike?

From the Students’ Union Office at a pre-arranged time.

How long can I borrow a bike for?

From 1 week up to 1 academic term, depending on availability.

Can I extend my loan?

Extensions may be possible depending on availability. Contact the SU at least 2 days before your return date:

Costs & Deposits

How much does it cost?

  • £8 per week (7 days from day of collection)
  • £30 per term (dates to be confirmed by Student Activities Manager)

Is there a deposit?

Yes – a £50 refundable deposit, paid before collection.

Deductions will be made if the bike or accessories are lost, stolen or damaged.

When do I get my deposit back?

After the bike and accessories are returned in good condition and checked by SU staff.

What happens if I return the bike late?

A late return charge of £5 per day will apply.

Bike Use & Safety

What is included with the bike?

A bike lock, front and rear USB-chargeable lights, a helmet, and a high-visibility vest (subject to availability).

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Helmet use is strongly recommended. Students are advised to use all safety accessories including lights and high-visibility vest.

Is the bike insured?

The SU is exploring insurance options. Full details will be confirmed before launch.

Maintenance & Issues

Are the bikes maintained?

Yes, all bikes are serviced annually, and reported issues are handled promptly.

What if the bike breaks or has a fault?

Stop using the bike and contact:

What if the bike is damaged or stolen?

You may be charged for damage, loss or neglect (up to £100).

If stolen, report to police immediately and send the Crime Reference Number to Aimee.

The scheme may expand based on demand, feedback and funding.
